What are perch seats?

Perch seats are ideal for stairlift users who have restricted movement in the knee or hip joints and therefore find sitting painful. They enable you to travel up and down your staircase in an almost standing position thanks to the shortened seat which provides a stable support area for you to perch on.

Perch seats can be used for straight or curved stairlifts and are available with the Simplicity+, Handicare 1000 and 2000 models.

Do i need a hinged track?

In order for the seat on your stairlift to get low enough for you to sit on, the track has to extend beyond the staircase to the hall floor. Some houses have a doorway close to the bottom of the stairs and the track may intrude across this. In these cases, a hinged track should be fitted so that the track can be folded away from the doorway, giving clear access.

The Simplicity, Simplicity+ and Handicare 1000 models are available with a manual hinged track. This means that you will need to raise and lower the end of the track manually. The gas strut assisted hinge is designed to make manual operation as easy as possible however.

Handicare stairlifts can also be supplied with an automatic hinged track which means that when operating the stairlift from the toggle, the hinge will lift/lower automatically. When the stairlift is not in use, the hinge is folded back by holding a button on the remote control so you don’t have to move the track yourself.

What are the benefits of a Handicare stairlift?

If you have mobility problems, a Handicare stairlift can offer a number of benefits. The main advantage is of course being able to use all levels of your home safely and independently. It could even save you the need to move home.

Handicare stairlifts also take up less space than you might think, the modern models are very quiet and they’re usually easy to install so you don’t have to worry about people being in your house for a long time.

When you choose the Handicare brand, we can assure you that you are purchasing a trusted and high quality product. Handicare is one of the world’s largest stairlift manufacturers and installers and all of their models comply with British and European Standards and they are also an ISO Quality Approved Supplier.

Is a stairlift safe?

All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate. These are designed to stop the lift if it meets an obstruction.

The Simplicity, 1000 and 2000 models also come with a numerical diagnostic display so that you can monitor the status of your stairlift – for example, when a safety edge has been activated.

Your stairlift will also come with a seat belt as standard for additional peace of mind and all upholstery options are flame retardant.

Do your stairlifts have any added features?

Handicare has an international team of product specialists who talk to stairlift users and healthcare professionals to understand how they can produce products to help make everyday life easier for equipment users and carers.

Thanks to this feedback, Handicare has been able to incorporate unique solutions into their product designs so that users can add additional features.

We are pleased to offer a series of unique features which can be added to the Elegance Seat for use with our single tube curved stairlift system. These include:

  • Active Seat – this unique and patented development provides assistance for those users who would like some additional support when getting on or off their stairlift.
  • Standing up – the Active Seat lever is next to the seat. When seated, you simply lift it up to activate the seat. Using the arm rests for additional stability, you will benefit from a gentle boost as you rise to the standing position. The Active Seat will then remain in an upward position ready to assist when you sit down again.
  • Sitting down – using the arm rests for additional stability, you can sit down as normal and the seat will give you extra support so you can sit in a gentle and controlled manner.

How do I know which seat will best suit my needs?
